GPS modules, what are they for and how to choose?
A GPS module connected to the flight controller adds position to the telemetry and enables advanced safety functions. For FPV drones the most important one is GPS Rescue in Betaflight, an emergency return home when the RC signal is lost.
Key GPS module parameters
- Chip: the M8N is the proven standard, the M10 is newer with a faster fix and better accuracy
- Satellite systems: a GPS + BeiDou + GLONASS combination ensures a fast fix even in demanding conditions
- Compass (magnetometer): an integrated compass is required for stable Position Hold and the correct return orientation
- Communication: UART interface; check that your FC has a free UART port
