Soldering irons and stations are used in FPV and RC building mainly for soldering connectors, wiring, and small electronics repairs on a drone or model. The right type depends on how often you solder and how demanding the work is: a basic iron covers occasional repairs, while a temperature-controlled station suits more serious work.

Iron or soldering station
A simple fixed-power iron is enough for occasional repairs and soldering connectors, but for more sensitive electronics such as flight controllers or ESCs, a temperature-controlled soldering station is worth the investment. It lets you work more gently and reduces the risk of overheating components.
Temperature and solder type
Soldering connectors and thicker wires usually needs a higher temperature than small components on a board. It is also worth distinguishing traditional leaded solder, which flows more easily, from lead-free solder, which is kinder to the environment but needs a higher working temperature.
What to look for
- Adjustable temperature and how quickly the iron reaches working heat
- Power output relative to what you will mostly be soldering
- Availability of replacement tips in shapes that suit your joints
- Portability and power source, if you need to solder away from the workshop
