FDM vs. Resin, how to choose a 3D printer?
The key is to work out what you will print and in what environment the printer will run.
FDM printers, for beginners and advanced users
- Open frame (Creality Ender, Artillery): affordable price, easy to modify; needs a bit more tuning
- Enclosed chamber (Bambu Lab, Prusa MK4): quiet operation, suitable for an office or living room, automatic calibration
- Suitable materials: PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU, carbon fiber composites
Resin printers, for maximum detail
- MSLA / LCD printers: layer resolution down to 0.01 mm; ideal for miniatures, jewellery, dental models
- Required accessories: UV curing station, gloves, washing station, see 3D printing accessories
To digitize real objects, use 3D scanners.
